When Rich Greeno, renowned local high school boys cross country coach, approached PREMIER in 1994 about sponsoring and supporting community track meets for kids and adults of all ages, we had to get in on the action. Coach Greeno had a reputation for being one of the best coaches in South Dakota with national recognition. He even coached journalist Tom Brokaw at Yankton High School in South Dakota.
Coach Greeno started these summer track meets in the early ‘70s. PREMIER Bankcard CEO, Miles Beacom, has been a long-time runner and participated when he was in junior high school.
PREMIER Summer Track Meets are free to the public and are held at Lincoln High School Track in Sioux Falls, SD every June for four weeks.
In 2015, we had 644 participants during week 4, which is an all-time record. We also had 1,948 participants total—another record! When we took on sponsoring and helping plan the track meets, there were around 30–50 participants weekly, so the event and its impact has grown significantly.
The goal of the PREMIER Summer Track Meets are to motivate individuals ages 2 and up to get outside, stay active, and have fun. It promotes the sport of track and field and friendly competition among those in similar age ranges. It also encourages community youth to lead an active lifestyle and build self confidence. There are both running events and field events such as the high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, and softball throw.
We also brought our purple-spotted cow, Cowvin Bovine, to the meets to talk with kids about starting to save “moo-lah” for the things that are important to them.
If you’re local, it’s not too late to stop by our last meet of the season on Wednesday, June 29—our medal night!
