A PREMIER Veteran’s Story of Service

November 9, 2016

At PREMIER Bankcard, we celebrate the gift of sacrifice our servicemen and women give to our country on a daily basis. We are mindful that these individuals are the reason we enjoy the freedom we have in our country. Veterans not only give their own lives to serve, but their families also give up precious time with their loved ones to ensure we are safe and protected.

As an employer, PREMIER Bankcard is proud to hire and support U.S. service members. One of our own veterans, Tim, explains what Veteran’s Day really is and how PREMIER Bankcard supports him in serving our country.

As we draw near to Veteran’s Day on November 11, I like to remind people what Veteran’s Day is all about. Veteran’s Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day—a common misunderstanding, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veteran’s Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

You can say I have military blood running through my veins. My father served our country for over 20 years of active service in the Navy, I too am following in my father’s footsteps. I served in the Navy Reserve for over 12 years and now serve in the Air National Guard for 20 years. I am at 32 years and still going strong.

Veteran’s Day means a lot to me. I am very proud to be associated with the Guard and when given the chance I speak very positively about the Guard. I have a sense of ownership, affiliation of being part of a great organization. I represent the Guard to my utmost professional behavior, we are all “walking billboards.”

As our PREMIER View and Value states, we believe in possibilities, and our employees are our most valuable asset. My years of service and dedication to our military wouldn’t be possible without the support I receive from First PREMIER Bank/PREMIER Bankcard. The organization has been very flexible with times that I need to be out for training, meetings, and preparing for service.

An example of the bank’s and my supervisor’s flexibility, I am able to work just a little more time throughout the month so that I can have the Monday after guard drill weekend off. This day off helps me do errands and work around the house such as mowing the lawn or shoveling snow (just to name a couple of items) that I wasn’t able to take care of over the weekend due to serving my country.

This Veteran’s Day, if you know any veterans or you are fortunate enough to see anyone in uniform, please thank them for their service to the greatest country in the world.

Tim is a Senior Unit Manager at PREMIER Bankcard and Master Sergeant in the South Dakota Air National Guard 114th Fighter Wing.
